Immune Support & Regulation

The lymphatic system, which includes lymph nodes and lymph organs, such as the spleen and bone marrow, produces a type of white blood cell (leukocyte) known as lymphocytes. These are cells produced to find and destroy abnormal or toxic cells, substances and organisms that have the potential to cause harmful diseases. Lymphocytes are circulated through the body via lymphatic and blood vessels.

This range of white blood cells works together in a “monitor-and-response” approach to identify and remove cells that could impair cell or system function. Often, modern medicine tends to rely on a drugs-first approach to healing which, unfortunately, impairs the body’s own ability to detect and fight infection.  An example of this is over use of antibiotics which, over time, can suppress the immune system.

Supporting Immunity

At Angeles Health we don’t believe in using artificial drugs as the first attack on disease. We use immune support as part of our Functional Medicine Program to boost the body’s immune system, helping it to stop abnormal cell activity and fight viruses and infections, without assistance from potentially harmful chemicals.

Poor diet and nutrition can lead to an inefficient immune system that cannot protect the body from disease. It can also result in auto-immune diseases, where, for some reason, the body attacks its own healthy cells. Healing foods and herbal medicines are proven to help in supporting and strengthening the immune system. By rebuilding immunity through healing foods and herbal medicines we are able to fight hepatitis C and aid natural restoration of health.

Boosting Liver Glutathione and Easing Oxidative Stress

An important step in treating hepatitis C naturally is the process of boosting glutathione levels and easing the damage caused by the oxidation of free radicals.

Glutathione is a very small antioxidant molecule that is produced by the body and found within every single cell. Antioxidants are important because they neutralize free radicals, preventing them from accumulating in cells and causing damage. Because glutathione is found within each cell, it is in the perfect position to neutralize free radicals within all cell types, including white cells.  Glutathione also plays a key part in boosting liver function, helping to remove drugs and pollutants.

This powerful antioxidant is shown to be low in patients who have HCV. Our Functional Medicine Program for hepatitis C takes the following measures to boost glutathione levels within our patients, boosting their immunity and improving liver function.

N-acetyl-cysteine. NAC is a derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine and has many uses in medicine, including treating carbon monoxide poisoning, chest pain, allergic reactions, reducing cholesterol and lowering heart attack risk in those with kidney disease. NAC is also used to prevent alcoholic liver damage and is known for its liver function boosting properties.

Amongst its many uses, N-acetyl-cysteine is a powerful antioxidant which neutralizes free radicals and raises glutathione levels in patients with HCV. This, in turn, boosts the cells’ natural ability to fight the hepatitis C virus.

Lipoic Acid. This is an antioxidant that is produced in small amounts within the body but is also found naturally in some foods, such as red meat, spinach, broccoli and carrots.

Lipoic Acid plays an important part in the way that cells process chemicals within the body. The antioxidant is used to treat nerve damage, lower blood sugar levels and to protect the body from diseases such as liver disease and cancer.

In the case of HCV patients, Lipoic acid boosts the effects of other antioxidants within the body (like glutathione and vitamins C and E), whilst providing powerful antioxidant support itself. Lipoic acid can help to boost the immune system and assist in repairing liver damage cause by oxidative stress (caused by free radicals).

Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin which is needed for the absorption of calcium and phosphates in the body, muscle movement, nerve function and for boosting the immune system, helping it to fight viruses. One of the ways that Vitamin D boosts the immune system is by helping the body to produce glutathione.

The liver and kidneys are essential for converting vitamin D into its active form. People with damaged livers are less able to convert vitamin D from its natural form into its active form, resulting in vitamin D deficiency, lowered glutathione levels and impaired immunity.

By administering medical-grade levels of vitamin D we are able to provide support to the liver through the production of glutathione as well as further boosting the immunity.

The immunity-boosting stage of our Functional Medicine program for hepatitis C is aimed at boosting your body’s own natural defenses against dangerous viruses. With our help your body will up its antioxidant production and strengthen its immunity, making it better able to fight the hepatitis C virus and help to protect the liver from further damage.
