Detoxification

Detoxification begins with your diet and supplementation program. We take your detoxification further by using additional therapies and nutrients to help increase the rate of detoxification and regulate your enzyme production to improve your liver function.

Modernization has created many advantages to western cultures, but at a price; pollution, radiation and contaminants in our food and water supply mean that we are unable to avoid some toxic impact on the human body.

Our bodies are designed to neutralize the threat of an insupportable toxic burden and contain systems which are activated by specific nutrients key for liver detoxification. These nutrients are crucial for adequate liver function and effective detoxification. However, many chemicals as well conventional drugs used to treat chronic disease, such as hepatitis, are known to impair and inhibit some of these functions. This means that many conventional medical treatment methods result in defective detoxification and in an increase in the toxic burden to the body.

Key Influential Factors

The Functional Medicine team will look at the following areas to determine your health and needs in order to craft your individual detoxification plan:

Genetic blue print

The presence of Disease

Diet and lifestyle

Environment

Age and gender

Once your needs have been established your team will decide on the best program for you. This may include:

Glutathione

Glutathione is a tripeptide (a very small protein) that plays a key role in liver support. Glutathione acts as a ‘scavenger’ of destructive free radicals.

N-acetylcysteine

N-acetylcysteine is an amino acid that contributes to glutathione synthesis and protects against liver cell damage.

Milk thistle

Also known as Silybum marianum, the milk thistle herb has been utilized for thousands of years to remedy a variety of ailments, particularly liver and gall bladder problems. Scientific studies suggest that substances in milk thistle (especially a flavonoid called silymarin) act to protect the liver from toxins, including certain drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), which in high doses (or in combination with alcohol) can cause liver damage. Silymarin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and is thought to help the liver repair itself by growing new cells.

Additional Treatment

Additional treatment modalities that improve the mobilization and excretion of waste will be included in your customized program. For example, for those who are physically able, an exercise or other physical activity is integrated as part of your detoxification program.

Detoxification does not work in isolation. It requires careful understanding of the different substances that will help the body recuperate and fight back diseases. In partnership with our cellular nutrition program, detoxification helps to cleanse the body of harmful chemicals, creating an environment that enables our bodies to function properly and react against the dangers within.
